When I moved from Michigan to Washington, we spent a week driving across the country. Till then, I had never seen anything west of Chicago; I had only learned about that part of the country through TV, music, movies, and stories. It seemed almost mythological in my mind, more story than reality. Driving across the country redefined my sense of scale. I couldn't believe how much rolling land there was, and when we first hit the Pacific Northwest, it was the first time I'd ever seen a snow-peaked mountain in real life. Now, I see Mt. Rainier on a daily basis, and I'm still in awe.
